The Clearwater River watershed has been the focus of a number of water quality studies dating back to the early 1990s. A watershed-wide study, the Clearwater River Nonpoint Study, was completed in the early 1994 and spawned several smaller scale follow-up projects. Two Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) studies have investigated E. coli and dissolved oxygen impairments in a couple reaches of the Clearwater River, the Poplar River, Walker Brook, the Lost River, and Silver Creek. The watershed is currently being examined through a Watershed Restoration and Protection Project (WRAP), which is a four-year study that began in 2014 and is due to be competed in 2018.
