The Thief River watershed has been heavily studied in recent years. A Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategies (WRAPS) Plan is a four-year study that is due to be completed in 2015. The Red Lake Watershed District completed an intensive study of the watershed (Thief River Watershed Sediment Investigation) in 2009. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) staff at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge have partnered with other agencies and organizations to conduct intensive studies of their own in and around the refuge.
